They Ask What It Is Like

After Chris' death I shared an apartment with a friend. On Chris' birthday my roommate asked me how I was doing. I said that the day was tolerable, that I was doing OK. He said that he didn't want to remind me of it by bringing it up. I told him I was thankful that he had asked about my day. I needed a friend to care. No one besides my parents was talking to me about Chris. When I asked my roommate if our friends ever said anything about Chris' death or about my family, he said, "They ask what it's like to live with you." read more
