Grief and Loss

by Deb Sims, MS,RNCS,LCSW

The Grieving State of Mind

I am grieving.

I have lost what I once had.

There is no future that I can see but pain and emptiness.

I don't sleep at nights, my mind filled with memories and sadness.

I forget to eat, what is the point.

I can't think clearly and I forget what's being said.

Things that use to be so easy and automatic are all jumbled up in my mind.

I am grieving.

Everything seems a blur as if I am in a fog.

I am asked to make decisions but I can't concentrate well enough to think it through.

My heart is broken and the tears won't stop.

Yet, I must function and I have no way or hope to do this by myself.

Who will ease this burden? Who will help me understand? Who will walk with me through this agony? Who cares enough to help?

I am grieving.

Deb Sims, 1999

Life after Loss

Loss - for whatever reason - is a fact of living in a mortal, imperfect world, and no one is immune. No one can anticipate the emotional and spiritual agony a major loss brings. Life seems to lose its meaning. Death is not the only loss that causes grieving. Divorce, role changes, job loss, change or relocation, loss of innocence and trust from abuse and loss of health are only a few of the other losses that can occur.

Grief that is out of control can destroy your happiness and health. However, the best news is: you won't always feel as you do during the first months after a major loss. You can take charge of your journey through grief. Grieving should be a very active something that you do to heal your wounds after a major loss in your life. There is more for you to do in response to any loss than just wait and suffer.

Let us walk the journey with you. No one should have to do it alone.

Debbie Sims is a Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Psychiatric Nursing, has a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She maintains a private practice in counseling but her devotion is to her position as Editor for Beyond Indigo an Internet web site for those who are grieving.
